Big ideas, real impact.

At MEDB BusinessSPACE, we help Hawai‘i-based space and space-adjacent companies turn bold ideas into real-world outcomes. We support founders working across space, defense, and dual-use technologies by connecting them with mission-driven government customers, clarifying commercialization pathways, and developing strategies for sustainable scale.

Building Hawai‘i’s Space Economy from the Ground Up

BusinessSPACE is a two-track tailored business assistance program designed to help local companies grow faster, compete nationally, and move technical capability toward customers and markets that matter.

Track 1: Early-Stage Startups - For founders starting from scratch, 7-month program beginning in June

Track 2: Experienced Businesses - For established space or space-adjacent companies ready to scale, 6-month program beginning in July

By building capacity for local innovation, BusinessSPACE strengthens Hawai‘i’s economic resilience, supports workforce development & job creation , and ensures our state has a meaningful stake in the emerging space economy.

  • We're a team of passionate thinkers and doers, dedicated to helping you building with purpose and clarity.

BusinessSPACE is informed by deep, on-the-ground experience in the space and defense ecosystem. Through MEDB’s longstanding role as a convener of the Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) Conference, the program maintains close proximity to national decision-makers, mission operators, and technical leaders shaping the future of space operations.

Our work is further strengthened by a network of experienced consultants and subject-matter experts spanning space domain awareness, geospatial technologies, federal contracting, commercialization, and workforce development.

In-House Program Leadership and staff bring hands-on experience across space-adjacent technical fields, business acceleration, and talent pipeline development ensuring companies receive guidance that is both strategically informed and operationally practical.

  • Program Overview

BusinessSPACE is a cohort-based business assistance program operated by the Maui Economic Development Board to diversify Hawai‘i’s economy and to strengthen Hawai‘i’s role in the national space ecosystem. The program focuses on helping early-stage and growth-stage companies move from capability to customer and commercialization faster, smarter, and with fewer dead ends.

This is not an academic exercise or a pitch competition. BusinessSPACE is a highly tailored program designed around industry and mission pull, helping founders align their technology with real operational needs across government, defense, and commercial markets.

    Participants receive hands-on support in:

    • Customer discovery and market validation

    • Federal contracting and SBIR/STTR readiness

    • Business model refinement and pricing

    • Strategic storytelling for technical founders

    • Workforce and talent integration

    • And more…

The goal is to help companies build something that gets purchased and deployed in the space sector while creating local economic opportunties.

  • An Ecosystem Built on Collaboration

BusinessSPACE operates within a broader innovation and workforce ecosystem led by MEDB. We work closely with:

    • Government and defense stakeholders particularly in the U.S. Space Force

    • Industry partners

    • Universities and research organizations

    • Workforce and talent programs including MEDB’s STEMworks Program and the P3I internship program

Our role is to help companies navigate this landscape efficiently by making connections where it matters and helping to remove friction where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Hawai‘i is not peripheral to the space economy. Situated in the mission critical Indopacific, Hawaii is operationally significant.

From space domain awareness and optical sensing to geospatial intelligence, autonomy, energy systems, and communications, Hawai‘i sits at the heart of Pacific operations, national security priorities, and real-world test environments.

    Maui, in particular, offers:

    • Proximity to key space and defense missions

    • Access to national decision-makers through the AMOS conference

    • A collaborative ecosystem where industry, government, and nonprofits work closely

    • A growing technical workforce rooted in place

BusinessSPACE exists to turn these advantages into durable companies that can scale, not just promising ideas.

  • BusinessSPACE is designed for companies that:

    • Are based in Hawai‘i or committed to building long-term operations here

    • Work in space, defense, dual-use, or space-adjacent sectors

    • Have a technical capability/expertise and are ready to pursue real customers

    • Want honest, constructive feedback

    • Are willing to iterate, pivot, and sharpen their focus

    You do not need:

    • A fully formed business yet

    • A perfect pitch deck

    • Venture capital already in hand

    • A large team. Single Founder companies are welcome.

    You do need:

    • A serious founder/entrepreneurial mindset

    • A willingness to engage with customers and customer discovery

    • Openness to learning what won’t work as quickly as what will

    • Access to MEDB Nexus

Workspace, convening space, and connection to MEDB’s broader innovation environment at MEDB Nexus.

    • Alumni Network

Ongoing access to BusinessSPACE alumni events, peer learning, and ecosystem connections beyond the formal program period.

This is practical business support, not performative mentorship.

  • Outcomes & Traction

    What We’re Seeing

Early BusinessSPACE cohorts have demonstrated strong momentum, including:

    • Federal proposals submitted and awarded

    • New revenue generated

    • Jobs created locally

    • Interns placed into space-sector roles

    • Companies maturing from concept to contract-ready

Beyond the numbers, participants leave with sharper positioning, clearer customer understanding, and a stronger foundation for sustainable growth in space markets.

  • This is free program that is supported by Federal, State, County, and Private funding streams. There is no cost to participate. This program may suggest some elective travel opportunities that would be out of pocket, but essential conference attendance such as at AMOS will be fully covered.

MEDB also will not take any equity in your company. We are here to help.

  • Ready to Build Something That Matters?
